Five renovation mistakes to avoid when you live abroad
Avoid gaps in quotes, property checks, permissions, remote decisions and handover.

Editorial update: 27 September 2026.
1. Comparing totals without comparing scope
Two quotes may include different preparation, materials or finishing work. Ask for inclusions and exclusions in writing, then compare equivalent work.
2. Choosing a finish before checking the building
A photograph does not tell you whether a substrate or installation is ready for the proposed change. Review the existing condition and required preparation before confirming materials.
3. Leaving permissions and access until the start
Clarify municipal requirements, building-community arrangements and access with the relevant parties before scheduling work. Requirements depend on the property and scope; do not rely on a blanket rule from a general article.
4. Having no process for decisions from abroad
Agree who approves changes and how photographs, measurements and samples are shared. Identify decisions that must be made before deliveries or installation can proceed.
5. Treating handover as an informal goodbye
Review the agreed work, note remaining points and keep the relevant care instructions. A clear close to the project helps you understand the finished work and its maintenance.
